The mission of Disability Services for Students is to assure programs of the University of Montana are as accessible to and usable by students with disabilities as they are for any student. Its goals are to coordinate reasonable program modifications for otherwise qualified students with disabilities; to advocate for an accessible and hospitable learning environment for students with disabilities; and to endorse self-determination by students with disabilities.
This position verifies, identifies, authorizes, coordinates, and imp! lements reasonable modifications and other disability services! for students; works cooperatively and collaboratively with University students, faculty, staff to develop, enhance, and expand knowledge and awareness of disability and civil rights including outreach to and participation in local, state, and national efforts; participates in ongoing development of knowledge, skills, and abilities contributing to the realization of DSS Mission and Goals, as well as the continuing evolution of professional standards; and contributes to continual program assessment and innovation in the delivery of reasonable modifications and barrier removal.
This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge of the University of Montana’s programs and facilities; knowledge of and skill in designing effective educational programs in a variety of media such as print publications, web sites, and broadcasts; the ability to deliver and or publish these programs; knowledge of and ability to adhere to the highest professional ethical standar! ds, including the University of Montana and the Association on Higher Education and Disability; and skill and ability to network and maintain effective relations with community and state service agencies, as well as the ability to effectively represent program access on internal and external University entities.
Required Skills
Knowledge of disability rights legislation (Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Montana Human Rights Act) and their application to assure program access and verification of disability
Knowledge of the medical and psychological aspects of disability and its individual and social impacts including the skill and ability to interpret diagnostic assessments and documentation of disability to determine eligibility for services
Ability to maintain confidential records
Effective interview skills that quickly establish rapport and identify the link between functional limitations and rea! sonable modifications
Ability to work with a diverse population
Knowledge, skill, and ability to assess and identify assistive technologies for students
Knowledge of the private, state, and federal rehabilitation industry and their respective roles in higher education
Ability to work effectively with faculty to ensure that modifications are implemented
Knowledge of appropriate University services or community agencies to which students may be referred for other necessary services
Skill in assisting students to develop self-determination
Ability to design, develop, and implement educational training for students and campus constituencies regarding all aspects of program access at the University of Montana
Skill in organizing responsible advocacy for identification and removal of physical, informational and attitudinal barriers t! o program access
Participate in recruitment activities on a local, national and global level
Ability and skill to manage stressful situations or people, knowledge of and skill in negotiating and mediating conflict between varying parties relative to access or the provision of reasonable modifications
Skill in being flexible and fluid in problem solving, at times under intense pressure or short deadlines
Knowledge of disability law in its historical context, and of the cultural, social and economic factors whose envisioned change, growth and development, can positively shape full integration of people with disabilities.
Creativity in approaching traditional disability problems, whether physical, social, educational, or otherwise, that potentially results in long-term enhancement of successful integration of people with disabilities into the social, economic cultural and intellectual life of the University, and beyond
Skill in recognizing potential con! flicts of interest or other ethical dilemmas
Required Experien! ce
A master’s degree or equivalent in a related field and three years experience working with individuals with disabilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
