Duties:
This position works within the Investigations Bureau of the Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and is responsible for investigating all! crimes in accordance with DCI jurisdiction, where computers are the vehicle for the commission of criminal acts, sources of evidence, or the object of attack. Join with other law enforcement agencies to form a computer crimes task force to share equipment, training, and expertise in investigations.
Conduct forensic data recovery and analysis of all computer systems seized by DCI and any other law enforcement agency within the state requesting technical or investigative services
Provide technological support to investigative sections within the state including the search, seizure, evidence preservation, forensic recovery of data from crime scenes, and systems used in crimes. Provide expert testimony in these areas.
Conduct undercover operations to identify, arrest, and convict suspects involved in the computer and high technology crimes.
Cooperate with computer forensics associations and monitor computer bulletin board systems and listser! vs to provide information, education, and training to law enforcement a! nd to the public.
Investigate computer manipulation crimes, which involve changing data or creating data in a computer system to advance another crime; embezzlements carried out as the result of the creation of false accounts or modifications of existing data to embezzle; and unauthorized access or hacking into a computer system via telephone lines
Investigate illegal online activities by monitoring and investigating illicit activities occurring on computer bulletin board systems (BBS) and the Internet, involving cases that include the distribution of child pornography, credit card and telephone fraud, copyright violations, gambling operations, money laundering, and narcotics trafficking.
Investigate all forms of telecommunications crimes.
Serve on the DOJ Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). Develop and implement DOJ policy with respect to the acceptance and assignment of cases by the ICAC.

The position requires extensive knowledge of law enforcement; investigative procedures; planning; report writing; coordinating the activities of multiple agencies and jurisdictions; Montana statutes dealing with criminal procedure, rules of evidence, search and seizures, criminal justice information and federal statutes related to those areas.
This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of covert operations and overt investigative techniques and operations.
Knowledge of and skilled in writing, executing, and presenting search warrants and investigative subpoenas to prosecutors and judges for review and issuance.
Comprehensive knowledge of the characteristics of a wide variety of microcomputer systems and software as well as a broad understandi! ng of electronic crime investigation to include:
Multi-user an! d networked environments

Computer security and issue surrounding viruses and virus transmission

Skilled in the use of:

DOS commands and various Windows programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
various law enforcement-related equipment including two-way radios, film and digital cameras and video recorders, audio recorders, etc.
Internet applications and environments, associated communications software, e-mail, listservs, World Wide Web, search engines, etc. Be conversant with graphic images viewing programs
computer forensic hardware including imaging and processing devices, physical computer assembly and disassembly, and computer component installation. Skill in personal computer repair
Education/Experience:
Five (5) years of law enforcement experience including a variety of felony investigations
POST Law Enforcement Basic Certificate (or equivalent from other state) required.
Must have a valid driver’s license and meet the qualifications to operate a department vehicle or personal vehicle for department business, required by state and department policies.
Firearms’ training is mandated for peace officer requirements and liability.
Experience with one of the major forensic software suites is required, with a preference fo! r X-Ways Forensics.
Certification in computer forensics by IAC! IS or a similarly recognized certifying body is required.
Preference:
A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology or closely related field.
Experience in forensically processing smart phones with a Cellebrite UFED device is a plus.
The agency may consider an applicant who is enrolled in a certification program or has met the minimum training or educational requirements to proceed to the required certification.
The specified experience includes forensically processing at least 12, windows-based computers as well as a variety of removable media, such as thumb drives, optical discs, iPods, etc. The candidate must have at least a basic understanding of smart phone forensics and the tools used to examine such devices.
