Duties:
We are recruiting for a level 7 or 8 Attorney. The level will depend on the successful applicantâs experience and ability. The successful applicant will provide legal advice and representation on problems, issues, and cases concerning administration of environmental statutes and rules and procedural statutes and rules involving DEQ. The successful applicant will represent DEQ in court, administrative hearings, and in negotiations. They will ensure that program positions and actions are legally defensible and that, when challenged or advanced to court, those positions and actions are presented effectively and persuasively.
A Le! vel 8 attorney (one with more years of knowledge and abilities based on! experience) will provide senior-level advice, will represent DEQ by handling the most complex, high profile, and difficult legal issues and cases, and may supervise legal staff.
Competencies:
The successful applicant must work well with others and gain the respect and confidence of DEQ staff, other attorneys, legislators, and the public. They must be able work cooperatively with others as part of a team. The successful candidate must be able to think quickly and speak with ease and authority. They must have strong skills in the areas of analytical thinking, persuasion, problem solving, written and oral communication, and multi-tasking. The ability to write clearly, concisely, and precisely is critical. In addition, familiarity with court rules and procedures is required.
Education/Experience:
The successful candidate must have a juris doctor (JD) and able to practice law in Montana. Level 7 requires 2 or more years of experience prac! ticing law in work that is progressively responsible involving litigation, environmental, or administrative law. Applicant must have 5 or more years of directly related experience to qualify for level 8.
