Duties:
This position coordinates and conducts investigations involving a broad range of allegations of felony violations of the Montana Criminal Codes and other crimes referred from external agencies. Coordinates with several agencies to provide investigative, law enforcement, and criminal intelligence technical expertise for other ! agencies.

This position works within the Narcotics Bureau of the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and is responsible for the coordination and execution of criminal investigations into allegations of felony violations of the Montana Criminal Codes â€" specifically those related to narcotics enforcement; work in an undercover, proactive capacity to develop cases that primarily involve violations of state and federal dangerous drug laws as well as other felony criminal violations. Narcotics Investigators respond to meth labs and provide drug-related training to many different audiences statewide.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
May need to work weekend and holidays. Work long hours alone and/or with individuals who may have varying degrees of training, experience and ability.

While alone and often without back-up or assistance must seek out direct contact with criminals, some of whom have violent tendencies, on their own t! urf. Possibility of vengeful acts against the agent/investigator or his! /her families by the criminal element. Likelihood of having to use force/weapon on a suspect is higher than normal for law enforcement because of the often-violent nature of the criminal element encountered by the undercover/covert agents/investigators.

Responding to and processing methamphetamine labs and high risk search warrant service is required.

Knowledge and Skills: The position requires extensive knowledge of law enforcement; investigative procedures; planning; report writing; coordinating the activities of multiple agencies and jurisdictions; developing, conducting and presenting complex long-term conspiracy-type cases; Montana Codes Annotated (MCA) dealing with crimes (MCA, Title 45, "Crimes"), criminal procedure (MCA, Title 46, "Criminal Procedure"), rules of evidence (MCA, Title 26, Chapter 10, "Montana R! ules of Evidence"), seizures related to contraband, criminal justice information and privacy/security regulations (MCA, Title 44, Chapter 5, "Criminal Justice Information"); family services (MCA, Title 52); Social Services and Institutions (MCA, Title 53); CFR 18 and 42; ARMs; and law enforcement and investigations including criminal justice information and rules of evidence. Knowledgeable regarding proper procedures for writing and executing search warrants, investigative subpoenas, and forfeiture documents.

Skill in using all types of complicated equipment necessary to conduct criminal investigations; conducting overt investigations; operating equipment necessary to conduct overt investigations; making correct/legal and appropriate decisions in highly stressful situations; giving instructions/advice; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees; communicating effectively verbally and in writing; and in reviewing case plans and infor! mation. Skilled in the use of firearms. Skilled in drafting and present! ing search warrants, investigative subpoenas and forfeiture documents to prosecutors and judges for review and issuance.

Narcotics Investigators must be skilled in accurately reporting contacts, witnessed events, statements, and maintain professional standards of integrity when confronted with situations that test their moral turpitude.

Education/Experience: Minimum Requirements:
Five (5) years of law enforcement experience including a variety of felony investigations

POST Law Enforcement Basic Certificate (or equivalent from other state) required.

Must have a valid driver’s license and meet the qualifications to operate a department vehicle or personal vehicle for department business, required by state and department policies.

Firearms’ training is mandated for peace officer requirements and liability

Preference:
A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration! , Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology or closely related field.

Typically this involves infiltrating drug trafficking organizations at the street level and working to identify as many members and upper-level dealers, in an attempt to significantly dismantle the organization.
