Special Information:
This position is represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSME) Bargaining Unit. Employees covered by the terms of the Bargaining Unit Agreement shall not be required to become members of the Union but must, as a term and condition of employment, pay a representation fee to the Union . Occasional travel required.

Duties:
This position performs legal secretary, and other administrative duties in the Major Crimes Office. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing staff support to attorneys and investigators. Prepares and drafts legal documents and correspondence. transcribes witness interviews; maintains filing system, records and discovery; makes appointments, travel arrangements; receives and resolves or refers complaints; coordinates office functions with other agencies; mail, fax, or arrange for delivery of legal correspondence to clients, witnesses, and court officials; make photocopies of correspondence, document, and other printed matter; organize and maintain document and case files; inputs and maintains data in Case Management System; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Competencies:
The successful candidate must have a desire and willingness to work in a high paced work environment providing support to attorneys and investigators responsible for providing criminal defense. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be detail orientated; accurate and timely in producing work products; work on a variety of work assignments simultaneously with interruptions; act with initiative, good judgment, and tact, often in stressful situations; be sensitive to the needs of our clients who are indigent and may have mental illness, drug/ alcohol and/or economic issues; work effectively with detail and recall; comprehend and understand legal documents and discovery; be dependable and flexible; and work in a team environment. Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and maintain effective working relationships with our clients, judges, attorneys, fellow employees, agencies and the public. Must have the ability to understand legal documents specifically produced by the defense; learn court and law enforcement policies and procedures, Criminal laws and procedures of the State of Montana; understand different aspects of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement and jail procedures; and legal terminology.

Education/Experience:
The above competencies are typically acquired through graduation from High school and two to three years of progressively responsible secretarial experience in an office setting. Experience working in a law office or with the court system desirable but not required.
