The Montana Supreme Court is seeking a Law Librarian to head the Montana Law Library, located in Helena, Montana. The law librarian is charged with the development and maintenance of the law library collection and services to fulfill the n! eeds of all Montanans. The Law Librarian provides strategic vision and operational management of the law library. The law library has a heavy emphasis on electronic media, ranging from real time opinions and catalogs, to resources for the courts, legislature, state officers, employees and Montanans.
Montana is a diverse state from the rural outskirt areas to big city life. Helena, the state capital, is nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Helena is unique due to the location, which offers many recreational opportunities from recreational lakes to hiking, biking and fishing, within minutes of the city. Helena, as well as the state of Montana, has a rich history ranging from the gold rush to the Copper Kings. You can see many old Victorian homes that have been preserved, museums which illustrate Montana’s lively history, fairs, rodeos and theaters that add to the charm of this great state.
The Law Librarian serves at the pleasure of the Supreme! Court with supervision by the Supreme Court Administrator.
The key duties include:
The Law Librarian is responsible for selecting, acquiring, cataloging and maintaining the collection of laws, court decisions, law reports, text books, legal periodicals, journals, pamphlets, and miscellaneous books.
Development and delivery of electronic tools and resources; Oversees legal research in all information formats and training of library users in research resources. Designs and implements systematic evaluation of law library collection in regards to retention, arrangement or condition. Classifies new items according to library classification schedule and guidelines. Organizes and supervises library programs and services.
Provides leadership in the development of educational materials for the general public including information about the judicial and legal system. Works with the OCA to provide public information services for the Branch.
Oversees the law library budget. Prepares reports, monitors expenditures ! and recommends projections of library spending for budgets; planning and managing of library space and facilities.
Assigns work, monitors progress and evaluates staff performance. Supervises six employees. Promotes library services and stays abreast of library related issues. May serve on professional boards and/or committees.
Assumes a leadership role in the state in providing services to pro se litigants. The successful candidate must have extensive experience and vision related to serving pro set litigants in a rural environment.
Must be able to establish positive relationships with judges, Supreme Court justices, Judicial Branch staff and the legal community. Developing outreach programs with the legal community on a statewide basis is a key job duty.
