This position is a Paralegal - Legal Assistant with the Department of Public Health and Human Services . The essential functions of this job do require extensive keyboarding and occasional travel. This position will mainly support the attorneys assigned to human resource issues which may involve individuals who are hostile and volatile.
This is a modified position with funding secured through June 30th, 2015.

Duties:
The position involves investigating and researching legal issues with the primary focus on human resource related issues. Responsibilities include: 1) Preparing legal correspondence and pleadings, motions, briefs and other legal documents for attorney review; 2) Obtaining and/or developing witness statements and evidence to ev! aluate the merits of matters; and 3) Drafting legal analysis relevant t! o matters providing a recommendation to the counsel based on facts and interpretation of policy and legal theory.
Competencies:Required for the first day of work:
Knowledge of legal research using Lexis and investigative techniques.
Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of investigation.
Knowledge of laws and regulations related to human resource issues such as human rights, disability accommodation, family medical leave, grievances (union and non-union), unemployment insurance, and so forth. Considerable knowledge of administrative law and litigation process including court procedures.
Ability to apply the Rules of Professional Conduct and Canons of Ethics.
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including using correct legal citations and terminology.
Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, in! cluding using spreadsheets, word processing, database, email, internet and other computer programs.
Education/Experience:
Bachelorâs degree with courses in Law, Paralegal Studies or a related field.
Two years of job-related experience such as legal investigation or assistance.
Other combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
